Breakdown
Mat Gamel was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 4th round of the 2005 draft. Despite being a former college player, the Brewers have been conservative with his progress through the minor league ranks. Gamel has had success at each level he's played throughout his career. Through 1,710 at bats in the minor leagues, Gamel is hitting .305 with an .864 OPS. He has good power and should be a middle-of-the-order hitter when he makes it to the Majors. Gamel is not a strong defender but he is improving. The Brewers will probably give him an opportunity to prove himself (defensively) at the major league level before moving him to a different position. The only problem is, where do you move him? Almost every position he could be moved to is already occupied for the foreseeable future.

2009 Outlook

Gamel will be in Triple-A manning the hot corner for the Nashville Sounds at least in the beginning of the 2009 season. I expect that he is with the Brewers at some point around mid-season. The Brewers would love to see him provide the same kind of mid-season impact that Ryan Braun added in 2007.
