Breakdown
The Milwaukee Brewers signed Alcides Escobar as a non-drafted free agent on July 9th in 2003 out of Venezuela. Since beginning professional baseball at the young age of 17, Escobar has hit .292/.329/.370 and has shown great speed and outstanding defense. Escobar doesn't have a ton of power in his bat, but if he can bulk up a little bit he could be good for 10+ home runs per year. He's most valuable defensively though and could be a Gold Glove candidate at shortstop for the Brewers. Of course J.J. Hardy is currently there, but the long-term plans are for Hardy to move to third base while Escobar takes over at shortstop within the next year or so. He had an outstanding 2008 season in Double-A and if he can duplicate those numbers in Triple-A, he could be in the top 5 next year, that is if the Brewers don't call him up, eliminating his "prospect status."

2009 Outlook

Escobar won't start the season in Milwaukee but will most likely end the season in Milwaukee. Until then, he'll start the year in Triple-A with the Nashville Sounds.
