Breakdown
Rob Delaney was a non-drafted free agent who signed with the Twins after the 2006 draft. After a mediocre college career, the Twins saw something in Delaney that others didn't and he has rewarded the organization since. Through 174 professional innings, he has a 1.91 ERA, 55 saves, a 6.6 K/BB ratio and a 0.92 WHIP while pitching primarily as his team's closer. Delaney has outstanding control, and strikes out a lot of batters. Here are his rankings from The Baseball Cube: As with others, these rankings are pretty accurate while describing Delaney. He and fellow reliever Anthony Slama have been moved quite slowly throughout the system, which is a main factor in both being ranked lower on many prospect reports. Like Slama, Delaney's potential is as a great set-up man and could close at the major league level. He has a low-90's fastball with a great slider and improving change-up. The Twins are very fortunate to have both these relievers in their system, and I look forward to seeing both with the Twins in the not-too-distant future.

2009 Outlook
With the way he's been moved up to this point, it is very possible they send Delaney back to New Britain. However, he really has nothing left to prove there and should be in Rochester at the start of the 2009 season. There's a slight chance he could make the Twins' roster out of Spring Training, some have even called him a "dark horse" candidate to make the bullpen, but I find that very doubtful. Not to knock his ability, but to actually believe the Twins would do that is very unlikely.
