Monday's Thoughts

Twins beat A's, 4-3. And sweep them in four games.

The Twins won in dramatic fasion in the bottom of the 9th. Luis Castillos started the inning off with a triple, which was followed by a walk to Jason Bartlett. With Joe Mauer up to bat, he hit the game winning single off of reliever Joe Kennedy which went between the 2nd baseman and shortstop to beat the A's. The Twins came from behind, 3-2 to tie it up in the 8th and then to ultimately win it in the 9th. The win marks a four game sweep against the Oakland Athletics, the teams first sweep since the Twins swept the Braves in June and the 5th series sweep of the season.

Boof Bonser allowed 3 runs in 6.1 innings. He left the game in the 7th with runners on 3rd and 1st. Matt Guerrier gave up an RBI single to Travis Buck which scored both Matt Kotsay and Bobby Crosby (both runs charged to Bonser). Dennys Reyes came in and pitched a scoreless 8th. Justin Morneau tied up the ball game with his 25th home run of the season to the upper deck off of Santiago Casilla (aka Jairo Garcia). Pat Neshek struck out 2 in the 9th and picked up the win.

Joe Mauer finished the game 3-4 with the game winning RBI. Luis Castillo's only hit was the big triple in the 9th. Jason Tyner and Mike Redmond both had 2 hits and a run each. Nick Punto had a 2 RBI triple in the 4th inning. The ball scampered into the A's bullpen and allowed both Redmond and Tyner to score.

Torii Hunter was out of the lineup to get some rest for his sore hamstring. He made a pinch hitting appearance in the 8th (which resulted in a strikeout). Lew Ford played left field in the top of the 9th.

The Twins have Monday off and Matt Garza will face the visiting Detroit Tigers at home on Tuesday. The Tigers will send Nate Robertson to the mound to try and cool off the hot Twins.

Glen Perkins rehab update

According to
La Velle, Glen Perkins reaggravated his shoulder strain and according to Ron Gardenhire he's "back to square one" in his rehab. This isn't good for the Twins former first round pick, he was supposed to stretch his arm out to hopefully start later in the season, but it looks now that if/when he comes back this season, it will be as a reliever.
