Thursday's Thoughts

Twins beat Yankees, 6-2

The Twins finally broke out of their offensive slump that they had for 3 games (scoring just 1 run in those contests). The batters broke out the lumber to put up 6 runs against Mike Mussina & the New York Yankees. The Twins struck early with Jason Bartlett reaching on Derek Jeter's throwing error, Michael Cuddyer advanced Bartlett to 2nd, then Justin Morneau later hit a ground rule double on the left field foul line which scored the Twins shortstop from 2nd base. Johan Santana was pitching fairly well on Wednesday, but he found himself in a few jams and also gave up another HR, which has been his biggest weakness so far this season. Jason Kubel's 2-run HR in the 7th inning put the Twins up 4-2 and Luis Rodriguez's 2-run HR in the 9th put the icing on the cake for the Twins. Pat Neshek may have just added a few more votes to his "Pitch in for Pat" campaign, he struck out Melky Cabrera & Derek Jeter while making Johnny Damon ground out.

  • Luis Castillo asked for the day off on Wednesday and also on Thursday to rest his sore legs. Luis Rodriguez will start in his place, but Nick Punto will play 2nd, while L-Rod plays 3rd.
  • Kevin Slowey will play his first game against the Yankees on Thursday, and his first game at Yankee Stadium when he faces the Yankees' Kei Igawa.

Giving up the long ball may be Santana's biggest problem this year, but because he is so good, the bases are normally empty when this happens.
